I was so very sorry to read of Phil"s death. He and I worked together for a number of years treating head and neck cancer patients. He always did a great job. I always greatly enjoyed working with him. I loved his delightful, wise-guy East coast manner. I was very sorry to see him leave Madison. I really liked him. I am very sorry that we never got a chance to sail together.

Trish, my very deepest sympathies to you and your family. I cherish memories of fun times with you, Phil, Cathy, and me. You and Phil were truly a breath of fresh air in my life, always surprising us with peacocks on the loose, talapia tanks, sheep, you name it. Peace and love to you all. Ellen

I still struggle to find the words that would convey the admiration I had for Phil and the sorrow I have had knowing for the past year, how he and his family suffered. He embodied the spirit of Physician; endlessly intellectually curious, compassionate and giving. He was a great man with an equally great partner, Trish. He will always live in my memory.

We first met Phil when he came to Madison to help start our new radiation oncology center. We always wondered why an east-coast guy would come to fly-over country but his expertise and guidance proved invaluable. We enjoyed our shared Baltimore experiences and the spirited discussions about the care of our patients. He would be pleased to know that the facility he help start is still thriving. Our thoughts go out to Trish and the children. He will be sorely missed.

I can safely say that for 8 years Phil was my best friend. We had wonderful long conversations sometime 2 to 3 times a week. I really can't say much here because of the pain I feel. I really miss my friend.

I have been reading e-mails about Phil's illness, decline and now death. He and Trish were my beloved neighbors on Old Indian Trail, Black Earth in 1980ies extending generosity and kindness unlimited for which I am forever grateful. Wonderful people. I am sorry for all your losses.

My deepest sympathies to Trish and family. I met Phil during the 2012 trip to Ethiopia with our Returned Peace Corps Volunteer group. Phil and I had served in the same town, although at different times. I was privileged to spend time with Phil, Bob Travis and Mary Bruckenstein in that small town, visiting farms, schools and hospitals. The best part of our journey to Asella was the sharing of memories with each other. I will always remember . After Sandy struck, Phil and Trish, whom I’d only met once, offered me and my son a place to stay if we needed it. Truly a wonderful, caring person.
