Henry Bergtraum died on Thursday, August 20, 2015.
He is survived by his companion Daniel Yee, his mother Bernice Bergtraum, his sister Lisa Bergtraum, and his brother-in-law Jonathan Greenblatt,
Henry was born on November 5, 1955. He grew up in Queens and attended Jamaica High School. As an undergraduate at Yale College he was a double major in psychology and literature. Later at Union Theological Seminary he earned a master's degree in religion and psychiatry.
Henry worked for seventeen years at the United Nations, for much of that time involved in efforts toward the decolonization of Namibia.
After his master's degree and training in pastoral counseling he served as chaplain for Ronald McDonald House on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. He also served as an Elder at the Church of the Covenant on E42nd Street.
Henry was a talented poet, essayist, musician and actor. He loved to travel and spoke many languages fluently.
His gentle nature and profound compassion and understanding made him a beloved friend to many. He will be terribly missed.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Henry's name to Ronald McDonald House.
