Joan Gillette of New York, NY, died on February 2, 2016 at the age of 81 from complications from cancer. Born in New York City, Joan was the daughter of the late Helen and Leonard Glickman. Joan grew up on the Upper West Side where she attended Calhoun High School and Finch College. Joan’s early career was spent at Saks Fifth Ave where she rose to become a Buyer for handbags and opened up a boutique for Saks in the Waldorf Astoria Hotel. Later, Joan became a successful travel agent working at Valerie Wilson Travel up until the age of 78, where she was highly respected and loved by her clients.
At the age of 25, Joan married Stanley C. Gillette with whom she had a daughter, Patty Gillette of Sleepy Hollow, NY. For 40 years Joan and Stan had a loving and and happy marriage filled with travel and the love of many close friends. Following Stan’s death, Joan was fortunate to find love again with Bob Pitofsky, to whom she had been engaged when she was 18. They had a warm and loving relationship for 14 years and Bob cared for her right up until her death. Joan is survived by her daughter Patty, her stepson Richard Gillette, her Grandchildren Kyle and Blake Norman, Jasara Myles and Holly Martin and 4 Great Grandchildren.
