Retired artist Sidney Buchalter of Manhattan passed away on Tuesday, May 24, 2016 after an extended illness. He was 89 years old.
Sidney was born to Louis Buchalter and Frieda Wasserfelt Buchalter on March 27, 1927 in The Bronx, NY. He was the youngest of three children, and had two sisters, Shirley and Mildred. He graduated from Art and Design High School and received a BA in Art from Pratt Institute in NY. He married the love of his life, fellow artist Irene Preveden Buchalter in 1958, and took a position with Gimbels department store as a graphics artist for catalogs and newspaper advertising and continued his career as a commercial artist with Rogers Peet, as well as with Sterns. His illustrations were frequently featured as full page ads in The New York Times.
After the death of his wife, Irene in 1994, he devoted his time to helping others with terminal illnesses.
Sidney was a lover of music and an arts advocate. Along with his membership to the MOMA, He was frequently seen at Metropolitan Opera Dress Rehearsals and other musical events. His appreciation for the arts led him to pursue singing and acting classes in recent years.
Sidney is survived by a son, Gregory Buchalter and his partner, Marvin Perez; a daughter, Victoria Korner, and her husband, Joseph Korner, and his beloved grandchildren, Matthew and Allyson.
A celebration of his life will take place Friday, May 27 at 4:00 PM at Riverside Memorial Chapel at 180 West 76th Street.
