Joy, was born in NYC on August 17, 1922 and died on August 20, 2016 in Rye, NY. Beloved daughter of the late Clara and Al Ostriker, Joy was raised in NYC and was extremely fortunate to be exposed to the best the city had to offer. She loved the theater, the restaurants, museums, and her schools (Fieldston and NYU). She grew into a very elegant, witty, vivacious woman with boundless energy, a wonderful sense of humor, and strength of character. During World War II she shocked her parents by very briefly becoming an air raid warden in NYC. In 1946, Joy captured the heart of the late Gilbert Helman, a lawyer and real estate developer, and for 68 years they shared an extraordinary life. Together they travelled the world, supported the arts, universities, hospitals and Jewish organizations. Joy loved learning and continued attending lectures, and going to the theater, opera, and ballet as long as she was able. She served on the boards of several community philanthropies and was on the Rockefeller University Council. Intelligent and observant, she had a natural ability to charm people with her many wonderful, insightful stories of her life as well as almost any other topic of interest. She was the loving mother of Denny Helman Rein, Mark Helman, and the late Gary Helman; Grandmother of Nicki R. Shalette, Alex Rein, Sarah and Jim Helman and great-grand-mother of Mark and Lucas Shalette. The family will miss her elegance, her vivacious personality and joie de vivre. As her name would portend, she was a true Joy and inspiration to her entire family and will be in our hearts forever. Contributions in her memory should be made to the Rockefeller University, 1230 York Avenue, NY 10065 attn: Marnie Imhoff.
