FENCHEL - Gerd H., PhD. 91 died peacefully at home surrounded by his family .He was born on March 29, 1926 in Berlin, Germany and was likely the last Bar Mitzvah there, before he and his family were forced to emigrate to Great Britain and then Washington Heights, NYC where they joined the community of German Jewish immigrants. He was educated at CCNY (B.A. and M.A.) and NYU earning a PhD, in Psychology. His psychoanalytic training occurred under various auspices including Alfred Farau, Daniel Menaker, and Gertrude Blank. With Edwin Fancher and Anthony Lenzo he founded the Washington Square Consultation Center, later the Washington Square Institute for Psychotherapy and Mental Health, a training and treatment center for psychoanalytic psychotherapy. He is a past president of the Council of Psychoanalytic Psychotherapists and an active member of various professional organizations including the American Psychological Association and the American Group Psychotherapy Association. He is the author of many publications and the founder of the journal 'Issues in Psychoanalytic Psychology.' His overarching interest was the expansion of psychoanalytic theory and to enrich basic Freudian formulations to include basic self-needs and spiritual dimensions. His avocations were opera, world travel, and photography. He is survived by his wife, Leslie Spitz Fenchel, his children Karen Spiler (Gabriel) and Eric Fenchel (Rosemarie), and his grandchildren Joshua and Evan Spiler and Natalie and Deborah Fenchel. He will be remembered for his vast psychoanalytic understanding, outstanding intuition and provocative sense of humor.
